Case study: Art-deco inspired bathroom with 1920s style panelling

The owners of this five-bedroom house in Bournemouth wanted to create an art-deco inspired bathroom which gave a nod to their 1920s home but with all the latest products.

*With the homeowners being big fans of art deco style, the team at* *Ripples Bournemouth* *had a clear aesthetic to achieve and with the existing bathroom being a 1980’s time-warp, the room required a complete reimagination.*

The layout

The existing bathroom was fairly modest in size so as part of the renovation works, the homeowners decided to double its size, ensuring there was enough useable space to house their preferred design. The extension maximized the room’s footprint enough to allow for 3 distinct zones to be created: an area for the WC, an area for a large freestanding bath and an area for matching his and hers basins.

For the WC area, the designer chose a classic floorstanding WC complete with black lid and ornate detailing, in-keeping with the Art Deco inspired scheme. To create a sense of privacy in a now spacious room, the designer incorporated a tall aluminium panel to the side of the WC, not only providing modesty, but incorporating a typically 1920s pattern and the perfect statement within the room.

Bath

The homeowners took much of their inspiration for this space from The Peace Hotel in Shanghai so a luxurious bath befitting a top hotel was very much on the wishlist. The designer found this stunning rolltop which, like everything else in this bathroom, has a hint of the unusual with its dramatic curved edges and platformed base. The beautiful chrome bath mixer and basin taps were a particular area that the client invested in – once they’d seen them it was impossible for them to choose anything else!

Another interesting element added to the room was the mirror panels behind the bath. The reflective surface helps to bounce natural and artificial light around the room and the antique finish adds depth and character to the space, contrastingly beautifully with the high-shine glamour of the rest of the space.

Finishing touches

Panelling was added to three of the four walls to tie all the individual spaces together and to incorporate another period feature to the space. Painted in pale gray, the panelling also helps to soften the space and add another dimension to the otherwise monochrome colour scheme. Art Deco-inspired mirrors were added above the his and hers basins and three towel warmers were added to provide ample warmth throughout the room.
